Facts about the Tarot

You are free to believe what you want about the Tarot and we all have our own explanation for the unaccountable.

This being said, you should keep in mind though not to take everything that has been told to you for granted:

  • You do not need a friend to get your first tarot deck. You can purchase it yourself.

  • The belief that you need any particular power to perform a Tarot reading is an illusion. Although many people report using the Tarot as a psychic tool, we do not believe the Tarot is directly related to it.

  • No need either to wrap your Tarot deck in a silk scarf or any other type of cloth, wooden box... Unless you feel like it.

  • Although many people link the Tarot to magic and other types of occult concepts, it is perfectly independent from them. No real historical links have been made between the Tarot and superstitions related to magic, ancient Egyptians...

  • The Tarot has become very popular in America during the 60s with hippy trends and then New Age, but there is far more to it than what has been told during these periods.

  • You can read Tarot cardsfor yourself and should. It won't bring you bad luck. It is often harder to perform a reading for yourself though because it is your own life and your own emotions.

  • Other people can use your Tarot deck if you want them to. Feel confident that it won't spoil it.

  • The Tarot is not clearly dedicated to tell the future, it can be used for many other purposes.

  • The Tarot requires no ritual, superstitious behavior or dogmatic ways of thinking.

  • Although many people use astrology to interpret Tarot cards, the Tarot does not directly depend on astrology and is not directly related to it.

  • Many people will tell you that the Tarot has nothing to do with any religion. However, symbolically speaking, many trumps are related to Christian symbols(Pope, Judgement, Temperance...).

  • There is no better deck for beginners or decks that are only understandable to experts.

  • You do not need to read many books about the Tarot to use it. There is no skilled tarot reader and there is no "right" way to do it.

  • Using reversals (interpreting a card differently if it is upside-down) is an important trend in english-speaking countries. As we said above, there is no right way for Tarot reading. Use your own logic and what suits to you best. We do not use reversals in eXotera since we believe a card has the same meaning whether something is upside-down or not, instead, we use both negative and positive connotations to one card (harmony and excess). Again, it's all a matter of choice and sensitivity.
